Gov. Whitmer declares that passing restrictions on gun ownership a top priority in 2023
Lansing, MI – Yesterday, during her swearing in ceremony at the capitol in Lansing, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vowed to expand Michigan’s gun control laws during the 2023 legislative session.
Whitmer and Michigan Democrats have pledged to pass “Red Flag” gun confiscation, implement universal background checks, and mandate that all law-abiding gun owners lock up their personal firearms in the home.
“More draconian gun control laws won’t make Michigan safe,” said Brenden Boudreau, Executive Director for Great Lakes Gun Rights. “So-called Red Flag laws shred your right to due process while also putting police and law-abiding citizens in dangerous and tense situations. Mandating Michiganders lock up their personal self-defense weapons while at home simply invites violent criminals to continue their illegal activity and expanding the gun registration system only harms the law-abiding gun owners.”
During the 2022 election, Whitmer touted that passing aggressive gun control measures is a top priority for her. She is endorsed by the gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action, which is largely funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“Whitmer and her cronies are pushing the same failed policies we see in places like Illinois, New York, and California – policies which embolden criminals and punish honest gun owners. Great Lakes Gun Rights and our members will lobby against all of Whitmer’s radical gun control bills. Her gun control agenda is blatantly unconstitutional, and Democrats who follow her lead will have to explain to voters during the next election cycle why they stood against law-abiding gun owners or perhaps even sooner through a recall election,” concluded Boudreau.
