NAGR Calls Out SC Senate Republicans for Weakening Constitutional Carry Bill

No compromise gun rights group calls on State House to strip the Senate’s anti-gun amendments

February 1, 2024

Columbia, SC – The National Association for Gun Rights is calling on the South Carolina House to remove several anti-gun amendments from H. 3594, one of which the organization deems “a virtual deal-breaker”.

Last night, Senate Republicans engaged in hours of discussions resulting in their accepting Senator Shane Massey’s amendment #36, an amendment seen by gun rights groups as unconstitutional.

Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights said, “Instead of putting their squishy colleagues in the hot seat, Senate Republicans knowingly voted for an anti-gun amendment, putting the rights of gun owners in jeopardy just to get anything across the finish line. This egregious legislation will not pass muster from gun owners back home.”

Gun rights proponents have a chance to strip this language from H. 3594 as it makes its way back over to the House. Should gun control advocates prevail in the House, NAGR has signaled its intent to refer the matter to its legal arm, the National Foundation for Gun Rights, to explore “legal actions and remedies to protect the Second and Fourteenth Amendment rights of South Carolina citizens” were this bill to become law as amended.

“This amendment introduces discriminatory penalties for gun owners, establishes a two-tiered justice system, and allocates an estimated $4 million of taxpayer dollars for optional government training for Concealed Weapon Permits,” said Brown.

Some Republicans speculated that the courts would reject Massey’s amendment and this amendment deal was a ploy to get the bill over final passage.

“We categorically reject leaving our gun rights to the mercy of a judicial system already tainted by corruption,” said Tommy Dimsdale, Executive Director of Palmetto Gun Rights, the state affiliate of NAGR.

The National Association for Gun Rights and Palmetto Gun Rights are urging legislators to strip H. 3594 of not only amendment #36 but all other anti-gun amendments adopted by the Senate and pass a clean Constitutional Carry bill.

The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s second largest pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members and supporters nationwide.
