Minneapolis, MN – The National Association for Gun Rights recently issued Cease and Desist letters in opposition to proposed bills House Files 3628 and 3570 and Senate File 3680, which seek to ban certain semi-automatic firearms and firearm accessories.
“Politicians need to understand that gun owners are not going to let them strip away their rights without a fight,” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights. “If these bills pass, the court battle that follows will be epic and expensive for taxpayers. Lawmakers would be wise to avoid the legal quagmire that will ensue if they ignore our concerns and the Constitution.”
The proposed measures punish legal firearm owners for the criminal acts of others. The broad definitions included in this legislation under the terms “assault weapon” are largely cosmetic and do not reflect the actual function or operation of semi-automatic firearms, targeting commonly used firearms for hunting, recreational sport shooting and self-defense.
“As the leading advocate for gun owners’ rights, we will not stand by while our members’ Second Amendment freedoms are threatened. Should these bills pass, we will pursue all available legal options to protect the rights of gun owners and defend the Constitution,” concluded Brown.
The National Association for Gun Rights served notice to legislators that litigation will ensue if these bills become law, as they cross a Constitutional line. The courts have affirmed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to keep weapons in common use for lawful purposes. The National Association for Gun Rights argues the types of firearms and accessories targeted by this legislation fall under this standard.
