Political Operations Coordinator

Salary Range: $50,000 - $58,000/annually

The Political Operations Coordinator for the National Association for Gun Rights is responsible for planning, preparing, executing, and evaluating political programs that advance the organization’s mission to defend and expand Second Amendment rights.

This role primarily oversees state marketing and issue advocacy programs, in addition to supporting federal political programs, ensuring that communications and grassroots efforts are timely, targeted, and effective in mobilizing pro-gun activists.

The Political Operations Coordinator will manage the state email and direct mail marketing plan, issue advocacy programs, and engage in extensive copywriting to craft copy that will mobilize supporters and the grassroots Second Amendment community.

Working daily with the Deputy Director of State Affairs and under the guidance of the Director of Political Affairs, this position requires proactive inter-office communication to seamlessly coordinate complex political operations in a fast-paced environment. 

Primary Duties

The Political Operations Coordinator will:

  • Plan, prepare, execute, and evaluate political programs, with a primary focus on overseeing state marketing and issue advocacy programs, including developing communications to:          
    • Mobilize grassroots activists
    • Lobby state legislators
    • Promote pro-gun legislation
    • Defeat legislation attacking the Second Amendment

 

  • Engage in extensive copywriting for various communications, including emails, direct mail, advocacy alerts, social media content, and state-level fundraising appeals.
  • Manage the state email and direct mail marketing plans, including drafting, scheduling, and optimizing email and direct mail campaigns to grow lists in targeted states, maintain high engagement rates, and increase donations in coordination with legislative and election timelines.
  • Plan, prepare, execute, and evaluate social media campaigns across multiple platforms including, Google, Facebook, X, and others, to amplify NAGR’s mobilization of members and grassroots activists.
  • Code rapid response or political emails that fall outside of the recurring marketing email schedule, ensuring quick deployment of targeted communications in response to emerging issues or events.
  • Assign, edit, and refine copy by regional directors or state group leaders to maximize actions taken.
  • Coach and train colleagues to become stronger copywriters, providing guidance, feedback, and resources to enhance the team’s ability to craft effective direct response copy.
  • Maintain and publish monthly state program bluebooks.
  • Meet with the marketing team, Chief of Staff, Director of Political Affairs, Director of Development, and Deputy Director of State Affairs to review and evaluate the state marketing plan quarterly.
  • Support federal political programs by executing issue advocacy programs as needed.
  • Conduct and report polling results on political races and members as assigned.
  • Collaborate daily with the Director of Political Affairs and Deputy Director of State Affairs to reconcile political priorities, resolve issues in real-time, and ensure seamless execution of programs.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of marketing and advocacy projects, flagging obstacles and recommending solutions to maintain momentum and meet deadlines.
  • Assist in data analysis from past programs to improve future programs, boost fundraising, and grow NAGR’s list of supporters and activists.

Position Requirements

  • A firm understanding of the legislative process, firearms terminology, and gun rights issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with proven proficiency in copywriting for political and advocacy purposes.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs, and the ability to quickly learn new software platforms unique to the job, such as email marketing tools and polling software.
  • Strong attention to detail in tracking projects, analyzing data, and managing schedules.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while demonstrating self-discipline and initiative as a self-starter.
  • Comfortable handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced, ever-changing political landscape.
  • Understands and implements principles of effective grassroots organizing and political strategy.
  • Experience utilizing issue advocacy software preferred.
  • This position is required to travel a minimum of three weeks out of the year for organization-wide meetings. Minimal travel to key priority states may be requested during peak legislative season from typically ranging from January to May.
