Last week, Canada announced a ban on 324 “assault-style” firearms and is working with the government of Ukraine to see how they can be donated to support the fight against Russia.
Previously, in May of 2020, Canada banned over 1,500 makes and models of firearms – a number that has since skyrocketed to over 2,000.
Now, Canada is adding even more — roughly 324 specifically-named firearms to the “banned guns” list.
This latest restriction, announced by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, also includes investments to strengthening firearms controls and tougher penalties for “gun traffickers” into Canada.
Richard Shimooka, a senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute criticized the move to send the seized weapons to Ukraine, stating:
“They’re all semi-automatic. If you want a true, military-style weapon being used in Ukraine, you want a fully automatic weapon. In some ways, it’s symbolic and yet in other ways, it’s not helping at all. It’s not going to move the needle.”
Shimooka also stated Ukraine suffers from a lack of standardized weapons and taking firearms away from otherwise law-abiding gun owners could drive a wedge in the war efforts in Ukraine.
