The National Association for Gun Rights’ Federal Liaison is responsible for working with the Director of Political Affairs with a focus on federal legislation and elections. Based out of NAGR’s Washington, DC office, this position requires an intimate knowledge of Capitol Hill, providing political analysis, communication, research, writing, oversight, and leadership.
The Federal Liaison is required to quickly research, write, and report on Second Amendment policy issues at the federal level. This includes aiding in bill tracking and briefing on legislative projects. In addition, this position requires oversight, training and task management of staff in the Political department.
As Federal Liaison, the individual will work closely under the management of the Director of Political Affairs, implementing and facilitating the creation plans, and completing the work assigned to them.
The job requires strong communications skills, self-management, and the ability to follow direct orders while executing multiple policy projects and meeting strict deadlines.
Primary Duties
The Federal Liaison must:
- Assist in delegating and managing tasks within the political department.
- Offer suggestions in planning and preparing, in coordination with the Director of Political Operations
- Facilitate training of team members and new hiring, making certain all members are up to date and capable of using political tools.
- Aid in tracking all relevant federal legislation in regard to the Second Amendment and policy positions of NAGR.
- Aide in sending out and compiling the NAGR Federal and State Survey program.
- Be aware of the major Second Amendment battles and issues facing all three branches of the federal government.
- Successfully write email copy and legislative planning programs to advance NAGR’s legislative agenda in Congress.
- Assist in managing the Federal Affairs call.
- Aid in managing our Congressional faxes and petitions from our members to Members of Congress.
- Work directly with our vendors and mail shops.
- Write and distribute internal office memos regarding policy research.
- Use FACL based models for planning, preparing, acting and evaluating legislative battles.
- Conduct Red Fox Four analysis.
- Keep up to date 5-Columns in each chamber of Congress.
- Meet with Congressional offices and maintain relationships.
Position Requirements:
- Firm understanding of the legislative process, firearms terminology and gun rights issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have strong attention to detail in legislative bill tracking, reporting, and research.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and ability to quickly learn new software platforms unique to the job.
- Comfortable and confident personality, dealing with outside vendors and communications.
