Colorado Proposition KK: Taxing a Constitutional Right

If enacted, Proposition KK would place a 6.5% excise tax on gun manufacturers, gun retails stores, and ammunition vendors.

Passed through the Colorado Legislature in 2024, HB 24-1349, would impose a 6.5% excise tax on all gun and ammunition sales in Colorado.

However, according to Colorado law, all new taxes are subject to the approval of the voters.

Ian Escalante, Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, had this to say about Prop. KK:

“To tax guns and ammo would be no different than putting a tax on newspapers or putting a tax on the right to assemble. It’s an assault on our God-given rights. It’s an assault on our sacred right to self-defense.”

Escalante expanded:

“The justice system should be punishing crime. Instead of punishing crime, they’re just going to go ahead and punish consumers. They’re going to punish people who are trying to defend themselves. And now we have all these people that would want to be able to defend themselves but aren’t going to now because they simply can’t afford it.”

Proposition KK will appear on the Nov. 5th ballot in Colorado.
