Georgia Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath introduced a discharge petition for the “Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act.”
This move would force a vote on the “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation bill in the U.S. House, should 218 lawmakers endorse the petition and circumvent Republican leadership.
“Red Flag” laws fly in the face the Constitution, by allowing a neighbor, ex-lover, or family member to petition a court to have an individual’s firearms seized, without any knowledge of it even happening.
Such laws have been passed in twenty-one states already and have proven to be deadly – such as a Maryland man in 2019 who was awakened by a gun confiscation squad, which resulted in a shootout between the man and the police.
These “Red Flag” laws even have support of some Republican lawmakers like South Carolina’s own Senator, Lindsey Graham, who sponsored a “Red Flag” bill in the previous Congress.
Other Republicans, like U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (TX), also led the compromise on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in 2022, which allows federal funding for states to pass such “Red Flag” laws.
On top of legislative efforts, the Department of Justice recently announced the creation of the “National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center,” will “provide training” to judges, prosecutors, and other authorities.
The National Association for Gun Rights is monitoring the happenings in Congress and will stand on alert should this scheme gain traction in the U.S. House.
