FOIA Filed by the National Association for Gun Rights

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the National Association for Gun Rights filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) asking that the Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs to clarify what “stakeholders” were present during their meetings in which they drafted Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) legislation.

This legislation is more commonly known as “Red Flag” gun confiscation due to the fact that firearms are confiscated from American citizens without being proven guilty of actually committing a crime.

“In their June 7th press release, the DOJ stated that they consulted so-called stakeholders to draft model Red Flag gun confiscation legislation. We want to know who they consulted – because they surely didn’t ask us,” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights.

In their “model” legislation published on their website, the DOJ recommends radical “Red Flag” gun confiscation bills be passed into law – bills which are designed to strip people of their firearms based on accusations received from disgruntled ex-partners, neighbors, doctors, and even school teachers. These dangerous laws allow government agents to seize real property from innocent Americans, without notice of a hearing and the right to defend oneself in court.

“American citizens deserve to know what groups or private individuals consulted with the DOJ during their secretive meetings to eviscerate the Second Amendment and due process rights. Backroom deals involving government agencies crafting gun confiscation bills sounds like something straight out of the novel 1984. ” concluded Brown.

The FOIA request includes questions such as:

What stakeholders were invited? How many times did the stakeholders meet with the Department of Justice? Did the DOJ or stakeholders keep meeting minutes or notes during their stakeholder meetings?

The National Association for Gun Rights opposes all “Red Flag”/ERPO legislation as an affront to the Second, Fourth, and Sixth amendments to the U.S. Bill of Rights.

The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s second largest pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members and supporters nationwide.
