Presidential hopeful Kamala Harris drew the ire of Second Amendment advocates after claiming she owns a Glock handgun, contrasting with her previous support to ban and restrict these types of guns.
Harris claims “I have a Glock, and I’ve had it for quite some time,” citing her “background in law enforcement” as the reason for owning it.
Along with her running-mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic Presidential ticket has repeatedly highlighted they are gun owners, in order to seem more reasonable on their gun control stances.
However, Harris has a long career of supporting banning or restricting citizens from legally possessing handguns and arguing such bans do not violate the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
For example, here’s a few of the gun control measures Harris has supported and backed throughout her political career thus far:
- Complete ban on pistols in San Francisco
- Microstamping for handguns in California
- Sought to block “good cause” requirement to obtain a concealed carry permit in California
- Submitted an amicus brief in support of the Washington, D.C. handgun ban (Heller decision)
This is on top of Harris’s calls for every state to enact “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation laws and directing the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which was created by the Biden Administration.
This office is designed to embolden the ATF and push further restrictions on the Second Amendment like bans on so-called “assault weapons,” safe storage laws, universal gun registration, and elimination of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.
