With three gun control bills heading to Gov. Janet Mills’ desk, the Legislature rejects “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation in the Pine Tree State.
The three bills heading to the Governor’s desk include:
- L.D. 2086 – A ban on bump stocks and other rapid-fire devices
- L.D. 2238 – A 72-hour waiting period on most firearm purchases
- L.D. 2224 – Expanding background check requirements to include private, advertised sales (Universal Gun Registration)
A spokesperson for Governor Mills’ office said she plans to sign Universal Gun Registration, but it’s unclear whether she will sign the other two bills into law.
The good news for gun owners is that the Legislature failed to bring up a vote on “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation, which would give law enforcement or family members the ability to petition a court to take the firearms away from a person they deem “unfit” to possess.
Angelo Veltri, Northeast Regional Director for the National Association for Gun Rights was quoted:
“While the Legislature has passed several egregious anti-gun bills, we are proud of the fact that our members and supporters turned out and defeated Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross’ ‘Red Flag’ Gun Confiscation bill.”
The Governor has ten days from enactment by the Legislature, not including Sundays, to sign the bills, veto, or allow them to become law without her signature.
