National Association for Gun Rights urges the Tennessee General Assembly to censure Governor Bill Lee for ordering a special session on gun control and immediately adjourn when the session begins on August 21, 2023.
“It is clear that Governor Bill Lee is blatantly flaunting his power to call a special session while ignoring his constituents and the voices of those they chose to represent them,” said Dudley Brown, National Association for Gun Rights President. “Elected Republicans at all levels of the state openly oppose this special session on Biden-backed gun control, and Lee’s executive order is not in line with the values of the Second Amendment or United States Constitution.”
Lee’s order includes:
- A carefully worded scheme that would effectively create a “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation law in Tennessee.
- A call for so-called “safe storage” legislation that would leave gun owners and their families defenseless in their own homes.
- A Universal Gun Registration scheme that would create a government list of every firearm you own, opening the door for future firearms confiscations and making it illegal to sell a firearm to a friend.
“Governor Lee should rescind his order for a special session, and if he does not, Tennessee’s elected Representatives and Senators should censure the Governor for his assault on the Second Amendment and adjourn the special session with no action on Lee’s firearms proposals,” concluded Brown.
Any new law allowing the government of Tennessee to decide who can and cannot own a firearm risks undermining the Second Amendment and diminishing the rights of gun owners.
Governor Lee officially ordered lawmakers to return to Nashville on August 21, 2023 to take up gun control legislation that will violate the right of gun owners in Tennessee.
The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s largest “no compromise” pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members nationwide.
