Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) introduced the “Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act” which forces law-abiding gun owners to lock up all firearms in a home if minor children are present. Failure to do so could result in up to five years of jail time.
“This is preposterously dangerous piece of legislation. Forcing gun owners to lock up all their firearms under threat of jail time is blatant government overreach, with potentially deadly consequences. When seconds count in a home defense situation, Rep. Slotkin wants to leave you defenseless. She should rename her bill the ‘Put Your Family in Danger Act’ and then immediately withdraw it,” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights.
According to research, states which have passed mandatory storage laws have never seen any positive results from the institution of the law. Rep. Slotkin’s legislation would federalize locking up firearms.
“We should be teaching children gun safety, not fear. On its own, this legislation is unenforceable, but does set a precedent for disgruntled neighbors, friends, and family members to rat out otherwise safe, law-abiding gun owners who want firearms at the ready for the defense of themselves and others. But this is what Joe Biden and the anti-gun Left want – Big Brother inside your home, controlling how you exercise your right to keep and bear arms.” concluded Brown.
The National Association for Gun Rights is calling on its members to lobby their representatives in opposing Rep. Slotkin’s legislation.
The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s largest “no compromise” pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members nationwide.
