Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R-CO-04) has introduced legislation that will prevent major shipping companies from discriminating against gun owners and allow the nationwide shipment of firearms
On July 30, 2026, Boebert, Co-Chair of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, introduced H.R. 9979, the Freedom to Ship Act.
The bill seeks to prohibit common carriers, like UPS and FedEx, from interfering with the lawful transportation of firearms, ammunition, and components.
It blocks carriers from declining to ship these items, imposing extra conditions not required by federal law, charging higher rates than for similar packages, or using other tactics that restrict lawful transfers.
The bill also repeals the nearly century-old ban on mailing handguns through the United States Postal Service.
Rep. Boebert stated of the introduction:
“For far too long, common carriers have interfered with the lawful transportation of firearms. The Biden Administration’s agenda was to take away our Second Amendment rights, and this legislation helps reverse that. The Freedom to Ship Act prohibits common carriers from forcing Federal Firearms Licensees to sign unjust, non-negotiable contracts and pay exorbitant fees. Discriminating against responsible gun owners hurts small businesses and undermines our Second Amendment right to Keep and Bear Arms.”
The National Association for Gun Rights has endorsed the bill alongside notable pro-gun cosponsors, including Reps. Sheri Biggs (R-SC-3), Michael Cloud (R-TX-27), and Clay Higgins (R-LA-3).
While this bill undoubtedly protects and expands gun rights, it also highlights a frustrating reality that for decades, the federal government has maintained an egregious ban on mailing handguns.
In recent years, major carriers have layered on their own restrictions, bans, and fees that often align with anti-gun pressure. These policies force FFLs and private citizens into costly workarounds or simply block lawful commerce that every other industry takes for granted.
Even when Republicans have controlled Congress, these discriminatory barriers have been left standing. Denying gun owners and manufacturers the same access other businesses enjoy has gone on for too long, and it must be put to an end.
Boebert is taking action. Now the rest of Congress needs to do its job.
Gun owners should not have to settle for a system that treats the Second Amendment as a second-class right while politicians claim to support it.
If lawmakers truly believe the right to keep and bear arms is not second-class, they must co-sponsor the Freedom to Ship Act, force it to the floor, and keep dismantling every remaining obstacle that discriminates against law-abiding gun owners.
