Texas Primaries Set the Tone for Gun Owners in 2026

Across the board, gun rights supporters in Texas showed up to the polls in droves to vote pro-gun in Tuesday’s primary elections.

In what was setting up to be a make-or-break night for gun rights supporters in Texas, NAGR-PAC endorsed candidates and pro-gun candidates made waves.

To start, anti-gun Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn is now facing a hotly-contested runoff election on May 26th.

Long before election season ramped up, the National Association for Gun Rights has been exposing John Cornyn for his anti-gun actions, which included:

  • Voting for S. 2938 in 2022, where Cornyn whipped Republicans to pass Joe Biden’s largest gun control package in decades, which funds “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation programs, expands federal background checks, empowers the ATF, and opens the door to new lifetime gun bans for young adults.
  • Voting for FIX NICS in 2017, which expanded the federal gun ban database.
  • Voting for the NICS Improvement Act in 2007, which strengthened registry systems instead of defending lawful gun owners.

Cornyn faces off against NAGR-PAC endorsed Ken Paxton in the May 26th runoff election.

Further down-ballot, but not lost by the national media, incumbent Rep. Tony Gonzales faced another primary challenge from YouTuber and pro-gun stalwart Brandon Herrera in Texas’ 23rd U.S. House district.

Like Cornyn, Gonzales voted for the biggest gun control package in decades, S. 2938 in 2022 — joining every Democrat in Congress.

Gonzales even took to the national media to hype the bill, publicly advocating for expanded federal gun registration.

His opponent, Brandon “AK Guy” Herrera, returned his National Association for Gun Rights Candidate Survey 100% pro-gun, earning him an endorsement from the National Association for Gun Rights’ Political Action Committee.

Neither Gonzales or Herrera garnered 50% of the votes in Texas’ 23rd district, meaning they will be squaring off in the May 26th runoff election as well.

In the Texas Attorney General race, Second Amendment champion Chip Roy is heading to the May 26th runoff as well, facing off against Mayes Middleton.

In House District 9, longtime pro-gun champion Briscoe Cain advanced to the runoff, where he will be up against Alex Mealer.

Additionally, Steve Toth, who answered his NAGR Candidate Survey 100%, was victorious over Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) as he faced serious heat over his previous support for “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation.

Lastly, Hall of Fame first baseman and NAGR-PAC endorsed candidate Mark Teixeira won the open seat primary in the aforementioned Chip Roy’s district.

Second Amendment supporters sent a very clear message to Republicans with Tuesday’s primary results:

“If you take a stand against the Second Amendment, gun owners will remember and will show up, and by the end of your term, you’ll lose your seat.”
