Utah State Legislature Aims to Expand Gun Rights

Introduced bill, HB133, introduced by House Majority Whip Karianne Lisonbee, would make a number of changes to the state’s gun laws.

Most notably included in HB133 is allowing 18-year-olds to open carry in the Beehive State.

Proponents argue while the change is minor, it would expand gun rights to young adults who can already already carry firearms under certain circumstances.

The bill also allows for the removal of criminal penalties for carrying a loaded rifle or shotgun in a vehicle, as well as eliminating the crime of carrying a loaded gun on a public street, both class B misdemeanors.

Furthermore, landlords would be prohibited from restricting people from lawfully having a firearm in their residence and restrictions around short-barreled shotguns (SBS) and other modified firearms to conform with federal law.

HB133 passed the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee last Friday on a vote of 8-1 with 2 non-voting.
