Lansing, MI – Today, Michigan Democrats introduced a package of gun control legislation in the wake of a recent shooting which occurred on the campus of Michigan State University. First introduced in the Senate, the pieces of legislation include:
- Senate Bills 76-78: Universal Background Checks.
- Senate Bills 79-80: Mandatory Storage Laws. SB 81-82 deal with tax exemptions for safety devices.
- Senate Bills 83-86: Red Flag Gun Confiscation
“Anti-gun Democrats wasted no time introducing their unconstitutional rights shredding legislation,” said Brenden Boudreau, Executive Director for Great Lakes Gun Rights. “They title these bills heroic sounding names, but let’s title them what they really are: no due process gun confiscation, universal gun registration, and lock up your safety while at home. If passed and signed into law, Michigan will rank as one of the worst states for gun rights – and criminals will see our state as a safe haven for their demented acts.”
Michigan already has universal background checks and a de facto registration requirement for pistols as well stringent laws on the concealed carry of a firearm.
All Democrat state senators have either sponsored or co-sponsored the bills.
“Gun control hasn’t worked here – and so-called ‘gun free’ zones failed the students of Michigan State. Now Democrats are doubling down on unconstitutional policies which will only hurt law-abiding citizens while criminals simply ignore the law. The sad truth is deranged murderers who commit pre-meditated murder are not halted by gun confiscation, registration, and lock up your safety laws. They willingly violate these regulations while good Michiganders who lawfully own firearms pay the price for failed gun control policies. We are opposing every single one of these anti-gun bills,” concluded Boudreau.
