National Association for Gun Rights calls on Naperville City Council to repeal “Assault Weapons” Ban

press release

The Unconstitutional Ban Has Caught the Attention of the U.S. Supreme Court

Naperville, IL – Tonight, representatives from the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) and the National Foundation for Gun Rights (NFGR) are testifying before the City Council of Naperville, Illinois to urge the elected officials — including newly-elected members of the council — to abandon the city’s ordinance banning so-called “Assault Weapons.”

NAGR and NFGR are currently engaged in ongoing litigation against both the city of Naperville and the State of Illinois on behalf of Robert Bevis, a Naperville gun store owner over these gun bans.

Due to a recent stay of enforcement against the state-wide ban, Mr. Bevis’s business is one of the only gun shops in the state unable to sell the most popular and common rifles in America thanks to Naperville’s continued enforcement of this unconstitutional ordinance.

On May 1, the U.S. Supreme Court signaled an interest in issuing an Injunction Pending Appellate Review which, if granted, would halt both the state and local laws.

NAGR and NFGR are asking the Naperville City Council to repeal their ordinance so NAGR’s ongoing efforts against the statewide ban can continue without running Mr. Bevis’s shop out of business and without infringing on the Second Amendment rights of all the citizens of Naperville.

“We’re giving Naperville this one chance to save face,” said Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights. “Naperville has the responsibility to restore their citizens’ Second Amendment rights and save their tax dollars from what is clearly going to be a losing effort. They should cut their losses now before the higher courts strike down their illegal gun ban.”
