NAGR urges swift passage of Constitutional Carry for Louisiana’s 2024 Second Special Legislative Session

Baton Rouge, LA – The Louisiana Senate is rushing Senate Bill 1, Constitutional Carry, through the 2024 second special legislative session, and the National Association for Gun Rights delivered 80,000 petitions on day one of the special session urging passage with no anti-gun amendments to weaken the bill.

SB 1, sponsored by Sen. Blake Miguez, passed Senate Judiciary C today on a party line vote of 5-1.

“The Louisiana legislature has the opportunity to become the 28th state to recognize a citizen’s Constitutional right to bear arms,” said Dudley Brown, President of National Association for Gun Rights.

Constitutional Carry legislation, sponsored by pro-gun Representative Danny McCormick, has passed the legislature in previous years but failed to get past then-Governor John Bel Edwards desk. Newly elected Governor Jeff Landry was endorsed by the National Association for Gun Rights PAC last year due to his enthusiastic support for Constitutional Carry as well as his 100% pledged support for the Second Amendment.

“This can be done the easy way or the hard way. Let’s hope the legislature continues to work on behalf of gun owners throughout the rest of this week. Far too often have we seen Republicans fumble the ball at the goal line. That is why we are encouraging members to swiftly pass Constitutional Carry as is, with no weakening amendments,” continued Brown.

Constitutional Carry is the simple concept that law-abiding gun owners who can legally possess a firearm can legally carry the firearm, open or concealed, without a government permit.

27 states have some form of Constitutional Carry in statute, with South Carolina on the cusp of joining the list. Louisiana would be the 28th state to enact such legislation if SB 1 becomes law.

The National Association for Gun Rights is the nation’s second largest pro-gun organization, with 4.5 million members and supporters nationwide.
