In a narrow but significant victory for gun rights, the New Hampshire State House voted down HB 159 by just six votes – 193 to 187. This bill sought to link mental health records to background checks and funnel that information to the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
Simply put, HB 159 was nothing more than a disguised “Red Flag” gun confiscation attempt.
HB 159: A Threat to Gun Rights in New Hampshire
While the anti-gun RINOs pushing HB 159 attempted to justify it by pointing to a so-called “process” for removal from the NICS list, the reality is far different. Removal becomes nearly impossible once an individual’s name lands on a government watchlist.
Imagine being stripped of your Second Amendment rights simply because a doctor, perhaps biased by your political beliefs, deemed you a threat. That was the danger posed by this bill aiming to pave the way for more government control over gun ownership in the Granite State.
Grassroots Action Stopped HB 159
Despite the bill making it out of committee with the support of weak-kneed Republicans, it faced a wave of opposition once the National Association for Gun Rights and gun owners around the state sounded the alarm. Emails and phone calls from pro-gun patriots flooded into Concord, and the message was clear: New Hampshire gun owners reject any attempt at gun control.
Gun owners from across the state made their voices heard by applying grassroots pressure on legislators and House Speaker Sherman Packard. This overwhelming opposition was enough to tip the scales and ensure the bill was defeated despite several Republicans siding with Democrats in favor of the measure.
Victory for the “Live Free or Die” State
This victory is a testament to the dedication of Granite State gun owners who tirelessly defended their rights. Your calls, emails, and unwavering commitment helped keep New Hampshire free from intrusive federal gun control measures.
However, the fight is far from over. Just as we saw last year, establishment Republicans like Representatives Terry Roy and Richard Lascelles will likely try again. Their mission remains clear: to break New Hampshire’s fighting spirit and tie the state into federal bureaucracy.
Stay Ready – The Fight Isn’t Over
Gun control advocates will not stop, meaning we must remain vigilant. We need your support to prepare for future battles. Please consider donating $100, $50, or even $25 to help us continue defending gun rights in New Hampshire.
