As Democrats in the Centennial State gear up to ram through a smorgasbord of gun control bills, Republicans are planning to fight back.
Among a seemingly growing list of Democratic gun control priorities, a ban on so-called “assault weapons” tops the list as the most controversial piece of legislation introduced in the Colorado Legislature.
Other schemes include expanding the state’s “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation law, a ban on homemade firearms, raising the age to purchase a firearm, mandatory waiting periods to purchase a firearm, and increasing liability for gun manufacturers and dealers.
Even with a Democratic supermajority in the House and one vote shy of a supermajority in the state Senate, it is uncertain if and how many of these schemes will reach the Governor’s desk.
The 74th General Assembly convened nearly a month ago and Democrats’ big-ticket bill – the “Assault Weapons” Ban – has yet to be introduced.
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, Colorado state affiliate of the National Association for Gun Rights, has already laid the ground work to build opposition to every single piece of anti-gun legislation, especially the gun ban.
A leaked early draft of the legislation wrought massive criticism from RMGO and gun owners in Colorado.
Since then, another draft has circulated, but both Governor Jared Polis and Speaker of the House Julie McCluskie have refused to support the idea.
Similar attempts by Colorado lawmakers to pass gun control since 2013 have been met with staunch opposition and even the successful recall of two Democratic state Senators by RMGO.
