Even with Republican supermajorities, two measures face some resistance by State Senate Leadership.
Following the tragedy at Parkland, Florida in 2018, Republicans squandered in the state legislature and passed a handful of gun control measures into law, including “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation and raising the minimum age to buy a rifle in the state.
Now, State Sen. Randy Fine is filing a measure to roll back the age to buy a rifle back to 21.
Additionally, State Rep. Joel Rudman is filing HB 31, a bill to allow the open carry of firearms and repeal Florida’s dangerous “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation law.
However, newly-sworn in Senate President Ben Albritton has told reporters he doesn’t support the open carry proposal and is skeptical of rolling back gun control measures.
In response to the open carry bill filing, Albritton said:
“I’ve supported law enforcement my entire life (…) And I stand with them today in opposition.”
Florida Gun Rights, the Florida affiliate of the National Association for Gun Rights endorsed House Bill 31.
Matt Mammosser, FLGR’s Director of Legislation, said this about the proposed legislation:
“Legalizing open carry and repealing “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation are critical pieces of restoring the full breadth of Second Amendment rights in Florida. The real question is, will anti-gun politicians like Senate President Ben Albritton ignore gun owners across the state and keep Florida on the list of states banning open carry like Illinois, Connecticut, and even California or will they finally defend the Second Amendment.”
Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a different stance than Albritton, stating about open carry, “you may get that in this upcoming legislative session. Stay tuned on that.”
