On Monday, January 9th, a federal judge blocked major portions of New Jersey’s new gun control, finding that restrictions on where concealed carry permit holders may carry their firearm in public.
U.S. District Court Judge Renee Marie Bumb issued a temporary restraining order against the law that prohibit guns from being carried in “sensitive locations.”
These locations included public libraries, museums, entertainment venues, restaurants where alcohol is served, public parts, beaches, and public transportation.
Bumb cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in the NYSRPA v. Bruen case, claiming the provisions deprived the plaintiffs’ constitutional right to carry a handgun for self-defense in public.
A spokesperson for New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy passed along the Governor’s disappointment in the ruling and claimed he is working closely with the Attorney General to reinstate the law.
