Two Sheriffs express concerns over “Red Flag” gun confiscation moving through the Michigan Legislature
Lansing, MI – Two Northern Michigan Sheriffs announced their opposition to “Red Flag” gun confiscation legislation currently moving its way through the Legislature as House Bills 4145-4148 and Senate Bills 83-86.
“These laws trample all over the constitutional rights of the people that I’ve sworn to protect,” stated Presque Isle Sheriff Joe Brewbaker.
Alpena County Sheriff Erik Smith also expressed his concerns over the legislation, stating “These laws not only do harm to the Constitution I’ve sworn to uphold, but also put the lives of my deputies’ at risk.”
“Red Flag” laws have been opposed by Sheriffs and other law enforcement officials nationwide over concerns of officer safety and constitutionality.
The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association announced its’ support for the “Red Flag” bills before the House Judiciary Committee last week. Members of the Association were not polled before the position was taken and shared with the committee.
“It’s clear that Michigan Sheriffs’ Association does not speak for all Michigan Sheriffs when it comes to “Red Flag” laws,” commented Great Lakes Gun Rights Executive Director Brenden Boudreau. “I’m thankful that these two Sheriffs have spoken up about their concerns and opposition to these due process-shredding proposals moving through the Legislature.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if more Sheriffs began to speak up against these draconian measures,” concluded Boudreau.
