The “Assault Weapons” Ban and “high-capacity” magazine ban, touted by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham officially died on Thursday, February 19th, 2026.
The National Association for Gun Rights is taking a victory lap after gun owners and gun rights supporters sent SB17 down in flames as the clock ran out on New Mexico’s 2026 legislative session.
As NAGR pointed out in an email to its members and supporters, this was not a walk in the park for the grassroots movement in New Mexico.
Supporters stayed late into the night to ensure their voices were heard in key committee hearings.
Additionally, the amount of calls into legislators’ offices sent Democrats into a frenzy. So much that some offices turned off their phones and even shouted back at callers — many of those callers being constituents.
The National Association for Gun Rights reports that during this fight:
- Over 200,000 emails were sent to state legislators;
- Nearly 85,000 signed petitions were delivered; and
- Tens of thousands of phone calls were directed into legislative offices.
Additionally, the National Association for Gun Rights lauded gun owners in the Land of Enchantment:
“This is not only a win for gun rights supporters in New Mexico – it’s a reminder that against all odds, even in deep blue states, grassroots activism and endless commitment can defeat even the worst gun grabs. To the tough pro-gun fighters in New Mexico: THANK YOU for standing strong and showing that against all odds, the fight against the gun grabbing elites can be won. It is YOUR efforts that make the ultimate difference.”
