With a commanding Republican majority, Governor DeSantis is aggressively urging the Florida Legislature to pass open carry freedoms in the upcoming Legislative Session.
In 2023, the Florida Legislature passed a “Constitutional Carry-lite” bill, which removed the need to ask government permission to carry a firearm concealed.
However, one detail was left out of the bill, creating a confusing law that ultimately banned open carry in the state of Florida.
Now, with a commanding three-to-one majority in the House, DeSantis insists it’s time to join the 38 other states that already embrace open carry as a fundamental right.
DeSantis stated firmly at a Plant City press conference:
“Why not pass that out of the Florida House of Representatives? They should just follow through, and I think they should do what they promised the voters they would do.”
Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez echoed this sentiment, affirming:
“We should be an open carry state… we’ll continue to fight for those freedoms and those rights each and every day until we get them all back.”
Even as some GOP leaders like Senate President Ben Albritton waver, citing misguided concerns over tourism and societal optics, true conservatives know that concealed carry alone isn’t enough — open carry is essential for Floridians to fully exercise their Second Amendment rights.
Albritton’s claim that concealed equals open is nonsense; real freedom demands visibility to deter criminals and affirm Constitutional rights.
House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell and others are pushing for safe storage laws and “Red Flag” expansions, but these are Trojan horses for confiscation, not safety.
Despite resistance, DeSantis vows to sign open carry into law if it reaches his desk, setting the stage for even stronger protections in 2026.
National Association for Gun Rights affiliate, Florida Gun Rights, is already collecting petitions, urging the Legislature to pass open carry and repeal “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation in the “Gunshine State.” You can sign your petition by clicking here.
Additionally, DeSantis launched Florida’s inaugural Second Amendment tax holiday — a move that slashes taxes on firearms, ammunition, and essential gear that runs from September 8th, 2025 through December 31st, 2025.
This temporary measure for 2025 could become permanent if patriots rally, proving DeSantis’s leadership in defending our God-given right to bear arms.
