The Wolverine State throws its hat into the ring in the race to become the 30th Constitutional Carry state.
Republican legislators in the Michigan House have introduced a package of bills intending to eliminate the state’s current concealed carry permit requirement and replace it with Constitutional Carry.
The initiative, led by State Rep. Mike Hoadley and a group of GOP co-sponsors, would remove the mandate that law-abiding citizens obtain a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) before carrying a firearm, openly or concealed, in public.
Under current Michigan law, concealed carry without a license can trigger felony penalties, even for individuals who are otherwise legally entitled to possess a firearm. Supporters say this places responsible gun owners at unnecessary legal risk.
If enacted, the series of bills — including House Bills 5653 through 5657 — would allow eligible adults to carry concealed firearms without begging for a government-issued permission slip and remove the $100 fee, while still leaving the option to obtain a CPL for travelers seeking reciprocity with states that require one.
Last year, Republican State Senator Lana Theis introduced Constitutional Carry in the Michigan State Senate as Senate Bills 406 through 410.
Great Lakes Gun Rights, state affiliate of the National Association for Gun Rights, spoke of the legislation on X (formerly Twitter) saying:
“It’s long past time Michigan became a Constitutional Carry state. For far too long and for all the wrong reasons, Michiganders have been paying one of the most expensive “coat taxes” in the nation.”
Currently, 29 other states recognize some form of Constitutional Carry as law of the land, including neighboring Ohio and Indiana.
The bill package heads to the Michigan House Judiciary Committee, which has a 7-4 makeup in favor of Republicans.
Great Lakes Gun Rights applauds the sponsors work to introduce Constitutional Carry and is currently collecting petitions in support of this legislation — if you live in Michigan, you can click here to sign your petition.
