Breaking Down SB 25-003: Colorado’s ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban

Colorado has become a hotbed for anti-gun extremism, and the latest assault on your freedoms comes in the form of Senate Bill 25-003. This bill is a direct and unapologetic attack on the Second Amendment, designed to gradually disarm peaceful citizens under the false pretense of “public safety.” Make no mistake, this bill is not about reducing crime or improving safety — it is about control. If you value your God-given right to self-defense, your freedom, and the Constitution, then this bill should alarm you to your core – regardless of whether you consider guns one of your top issues or not.

At its core, SB 25-003 criminalizes the future ownership, sale, transfer, and purchase of some of the most common firearms and firearm accessories in America. It specifically targets semi-automatic rifles and shotguns with detachable magazines and gas-operated handguns. These are the very tools that millions of Americans use every day to protect their families, their property, and their lives. And yet, under this bill, transferring these firearms in Colorado will make you a criminal, subject to fines, hard jail time and the potential loss of your Second Amendment rights for life.

This bill also introduces a vague and dangerous new definition of “rapid-fire devices,” which it classifies as “dangerous weapons.” These so-called rapid-fire devices are described as any part, accessory, or modification that increases the rate of fire of a semi-automatic firearm. What does this mean in practice? It means that any number of perfectly legal and widely used firearm parts — from aftermarket triggers to simple modifications for safety or comfort — could suddenly be outlawed. Specifically, we believe this targets binary triggers, forced reset triggers, and Glock switches. But make no mistake, this vague language is intentional. It allows anti-gun politicians and bureaucrats to broaden the scope of the law at will, making criminals out of responsible gun owners who are simply trying to exercise their rights.

The penalties for violating SB 25-003 are nothing short of draconian. A first offense is classified as a misdemeanor, with a second offense escalating to a felony. This is significant because a felony conviction strips you of your right to own firearms altogether. This means that a peaceable gun owner who violates this convoluted law could lose their Second Amendment rights for life. Additionally, firearm dealers who are found to have violated the provisions of this bill will have their state permits revoked, effectively shutting down their businesses. This isn’t just an attack on gun owners; it’s an attack on the entire firearms industry.

The most outrageous aspect of SB 25-003 is the double standard it creates. While ordinary citizens are stripped of their rights, exemptions are made for law enforcement, government officials, and the military. This two-tiered system sends a clear message: your life is less valuable than that of a government agent’s. This isn’t about safety; it’s about control. It’s about creating a society in which only the government and its agents have access to firearms, leaving the rest of us defenseless.

Let’s not kid ourselves. This bill doesn’t target criminals. Criminals, by definition, do not follow laws. The Venezuelan gang-banger in Aurora or the career criminal in Pueblo isn’t going to stop using a semiautomatic firearm because of this legislation. Instead, this bill targets ordinary Coloradans — the very people who respect and obey the law. It punishes responsible gun owners while doing nothing to address the root causes of violent crime. In fact, by disarming the peaceable population, this bill makes it easier for criminals to operate. After all, why would a criminal fear a defenseless victim?

This is not just a Colorado problem. Colorado has long been a testing ground for radical anti-gun policies. If SB 25-003 passes, it will serve as a blueprint for anti-gun extremists across the country. States like California, Illinois, and New York are watching closely, waiting to replicate these unconstitutional restrictions. And don’t think for a second that the federal government isn’t paying attention. If this bill succeeds in Colorado, it could pave the way for similar legislation nationally. SB 25-003 is not just an attack on Colorado gun owners; it is an attack on every gun owner in America in 2028. Remember, radical anti-gun democrats are playing the long game.

One of the most insidious aspects of SB 25-003 is its chilling effect on firearm ownership. By creating a legal minefield where gun owners can be punished for even minor infractions, this bill seeks to discourage people from exercising their Second Amendment rights. Why would someone purchase a firearm if they risk becoming a criminal simply for owning it? Why would a business sell firearms if they could lose their license for unknowingly violating a vague and convoluted law? This is precisely what the anti-gun extremists want. They know they can’t repeal the Second Amendment outright, so they’re using legislation like SB 25-003 to make gun ownership so burdensome and risky that people simply give up.

The consequences of this bill will be far-reaching. For one, it will decimate businesses both big and small in the firearms industry. Colorado gun shops, manufacturers, and dealers will face unprecedented scrutiny and the constant threat of losing their licenses. Many will be forced to shut down, depriving Coloradans of access to firearms and related services. This economic impact will ripple throughout the state, affecting not just gun businesses but also the communities that rely on them.

More importantly, this bill will leave peaceable citizens defenseless. In a world where violent crime is on the rise, the ability to protect yourself and your family has never been more critical. But SB 25-003 seeks to strip that right away, leaving Coloradans at the mercy of criminals who, rest assured, will not be following this law. This isn’t just dangerous; it’s immoral. The right to self-defense is fundamental. It is not something that can be granted or taken away by politicians. It is a natural right, enshrined in the Constitution and protected by the Second Amendment.

SB 25-003 is also a blatant violation of the Constitution. The Second Amendment clearly states that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This language is unambiguous. It doesn’t say “the right of the people, unless the government decides otherwise…” It doesn’t say “the right of the people, unless it’s a semiautomatic firearm…” It says “shall not be infringed.” Yet, SB 25-003 seeks to do exactly that. It seeks to infringe upon your rights, to make it harder — if not impossible — for you to own and use most modern firearms. This is not just bad policy; it is unconstitutional.

So, what can you do? First, if you live in Colorado, you must contact your state representatives and demand that they oppose SB 25-003. Be firm, but respectful. Let them know that you will not stand for this assault on your rights. Second, support organizations like the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) and Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO) that are fighting tirelessly to defend your freedoms. These groups are on the front lines fighting to stop bills like SB 25-003 before they can become law.

Third, and likely most important, sign RMGO’s petition opposing SB 25-003. RMGO will deliver your signed petitions directly to lawmakers at no cost to you, showing them the overwhelming opposition from Coloradans like you

Fourth, spread the word. Share this article with your friends, your family, and your social media followers. The more people know about this bill, the stronger the opposition.

Finally, stay involved. Attend rallies, town halls, and public hearings. Make your voice heard. The anti-gun extremists pushing SB 25-003 are counting on you to stay silent. They’re counting on you to do nothing while they strip away your rights. Don’t give them the satisfaction. Stand up, speak out, and fight back.

The Second Amendment is not up for debate. It is not a privilege granted by politicians. It is a fundamental right, enshrined in our Constitution and endowed by our Creator. SB 25-003 is an affront to that right, and it must be stopped. If we don’t fight this bill now, we risk losing not just our rights in Colorado but our rights as Americans. This is a battle we cannot afford to lose. The time to act is now. Will you stand for your rights? Will you stand for the Constitution? Or will you let the anti-gun extremists win? The choice is yours.
