NAGR Celebrates Grassroots Victory Over One of Washington’s Leading Republican Gun Control Advocates
The National Association for Gun Rights is celebrating a massive victory for the Second Amendment after longtime U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) was defeated in the Texas primary runoff election following years of backlash from grassroots gun owners over his support for federal gun control measures.
Dudley Brown, President of the National Association for Gun Rights, proclaimed:
“For over a decade now, the National Association for Gun Rights’ members and staff have made it our mission to rid the country of this backstabbing traitor to the Second Amendment. And we did it.”
Cornyn became the face of Republican-backed gun control after helping negotiate and pass Joe Biden’s 2022 gun control package, legislation that expanded so-called “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation programs and increased federal involvement in firearm regulations.
NAGR blasted Cornyn for supporting measures that funded gun confiscation schemes with hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars, empowered the ATF to crack down on private firearm sales, and expanded federal restrictions that could permanently strip young Americans of their gun rights.
The organization also pointed to Cornyn’s role in advancing the FIX-NICS legislation in 2018, which many gun owners viewed as a major expansion of the federal firearm background check system.
Cornyn’s primary runoff opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, was NAGR-PAC endorsed and returned his candidate survey 100% pro-gun — doubling down to fight against the exact policies Cornyn fought to become law.
Cornyn’s defeat is sending a warning to every Republican in Washington who believes they can compromise on the Second Amendment without compromises.
Despite Cornyn’s deep establishment backing, massive fundraising network, and support from corporate political interests, NAGR said grassroots activists ultimately overwhelmed the Texas senator through relentless organizing, donations, and voter pressure.
The defeat of incumbent John Cornyn is proof that the Second Amendment remains one of the most powerful political forces in the country and the outcome should serve as a political wake-up call for all Republicans.
Paxton will now face Texas House Rep. James Talarico (R-TX) in the race for one of Texas’ U.S. Senate seats in November.
